Julian, Paul Rowland
Biography
Born in 1929, Paul R. Julian joined NCAR as a scientist early in NCAR's history. He was a member of the Climate Analysis Section (CAS) in CGD (Climate and Global Dynamics). In 1971, he and Roland A. Madden co-authored a paper titled "Detection of a 40-50 day oscillation in the zonal wind in the tropical Pacific." The Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) theory developed from their research and remains influential in climate research. Julian separated from NCAR circa 1987.
