John Lathrop Jerome Hart Papers
Content Description
In 1940, Harvard graduate student, Walter Orr Roberts, and his doctoral adviser, astrophysicist Donald Menzel, founded a small solar observing station high on the Continental Divide in Climax, Colorado. Over the years, the station evolved into the High Altitude Observatory (HAO), growing substantially after World War II. In 1946, HAO's laboratory and administrative facilities were transferred to the University of Colorado in Boulder. The observatory was managed by a Board of Trustees, including McGeorge Bundy, dean at Harvard University, Robert L. Stearns, president of the University of Colorado (later replaced by Ward Darley), John L. J. Hart, Judge William S. Jackson, Peter H. Holme, and E. Ray Campbell. The Hart collection contains financial reports, meeting agendas and minutes, memoranda, annual reports, a certificate of incorporation, contracts, future plans, historical accounts, and scientific updates of the High Altitude Observatory at Climax. Also included are correspondence and project reports detailing observations from the Observatory in Climax as well as memorabilia and news clippings of events.
