J. Doyne Sartor joined NCAR’s Laboratory of Atmospheric Sciences (LAS) in 1962, coming from the Rand Corporation. He led the Atmospheric Electricity group in LAS, and subsequently the Cloud Physics group. In 1970, the Atmospheric Physics Department was created within LAS, and Sartor was appointed department head. The department included four programs: the Cloud Physics Program, the Ice Physics Program, the Lidar and Nucleation Program, and the Thunderstorm Measurement Program. Following the reorganization of NCAR in 1973, Sartor worked as a scientist with the National Hail Research Experiment (NHRE).
