Biographical / Historical
Edward Zipser came to NCAR as a post-doctoral scientist in the Laboratory of Atmospheric Sciences in 1966. He worked on a number of major field programs, beginning as coordinator of the Line Islands Experiment in 1967. He worked on the Global Atmospheric Research Program (GARP) Atlantic Tropical Experiment (GATE) throughout much of the 1970s. Following the reorganization of NCAR in 1973, Zipser was assigned to the Atmospheric Analysis and Prediction (AAP) division, leading the GARP and GATE Project teams. From 1977 to 1980, he was part of the Mesoscale Research Section in AAP. In 1980 he moved to the Convective Storms Division (CSD), and he was appointed director of CSD in 1984. In 1987, CSD was combined with the AAP Mesoscale Research Section to form a new NCAR lab, Microscale and Mesoscale Meteorology (MMM). Zipser worked as a scientist in MMM from 1987 through 1989, when he left NCAR to head Texas A&M University’s meteorology department.
