Supercomputing: The View from NCAR FY 88 Review & FY 89-90 Development Plan (1 of 2), 1988

A 198 page bound manual dated December, 1988 containing a FY88 Review and FY89-90 Development Plan for the NCAR Scientific Computing Division. Good summary of SCD as it existed in 1988. This document contains sections on NCAR Graphics and Scientific Visualization. The UNIX specific version of NCAR Graphics is mentioned as well as the implementation of the GKS ANSI standard as the low-level basis for the package. The effort in the early and mid-1980s to base NCAR Graphics on national standards was a major decision causing a large staff commitment and some disruption at the user level. The C version of the metafile translator is mentioned; two color DICOMED cameras were obtained allowing for color film output for the first time. A proposal was submitted to DEC to test and develop high-end visualization techniques in the atmospheric sciences.
