Biographical / Historical
NCAR Director and UCAR President Francis Bretherton chaired the Earth System Sciences Committee (ESSC) from 1985-1988. The ESSC was a program of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The committee drafted and NASA published Earth System Science Overview: A Program for Global Change in 1986 and Earth System Science: A Closer View in 1988. NASA's ESSC was one of the first organizations to officially study and report on the emergence of Earth system science and included several NCAR/UCAR staff in addition to Bretherton.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
This collection was transferred from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks Archives. The materials were originally donated to UAF by Laura Lee McCauley Gance, member of UCAR Office of Interdisciplinary Research who also participated in the ESSC, in 1993. In 2016, McCauley Gance requested that UAF transfer the materials to the NCAR Archives. Accession 2016.009.
