Scope and Contents

The papers of Richard A. Anthes document his scientific, administrative, professional, and advisory activities during his decades at UCAR and NCAR, as well as during his years at the Pennsylvania State University and the Naval Postgraduate Academy. Most of the collection consists of paper-based textual materials, including correspondence, memoranda, reports, articles and publications, research materials, lecture notes, and teaching materials. A small amount of audiovisual material and several artifacts are also included in the collection.

Biographical / Historical

Richard A. Anthes, President Emeritus of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), is a highly regarded atmospheric scientist, author, educator, and administrator. He studied meteorology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he obtained his bachelor’s, masters, and doctoral degrees. In 1971 Dr. Anthes started teaching and conducting research at The Pennsylvania State University, where he attained a full professorship in 1978. The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) welcomed Dr. Anthes in 1981 when he became the director of NCAR's Atmospheric Analysis and Prediction Division (AAP). In 1986, Dr. Anthes became the director of NCAR, and he was selected to become the president of UCAR in 1988. When he stepped down from the UCAR presidency in January 2012, he was the longest serving UCAR president since the organization was established in 1960. Dr. Anthes’ scientific expertise includes hurricanes and other tropical cyclones, numerical weather forecasting, satellite observations, and technology transfer to less developed countries.

The collection is organized in seven series: Series I: UCAR President’s Office; Series II: AAP and NCAR; Series III: Faculty positions and graduate work; Series IV: Publications and presentations; Series V: Correspondence; Series VI: Meeting notes; Series VII: Audiovisual and photographic materials; Series VIII: Artifacts.

Physical Access Requirements

The collection must be viewed in the Archives during normal business hours.

Technical Access Requirements

The films in the Photographic and Audiovisual Materials series are not currently available for playback, as they have not been reformatted to a digital medium.

Method of Acquisition

The Richard A. Anthes Papers were given to the NCAR Archives by Richard A. Anthes in multiple accessions in 2011 and 2012, with additional accessions in 2024 and 2025.

Related records are located in the UCAR Records collection. Additionally, the American Meteorological Society (AMS) Oral History Project collection contains an oral history interview with Richard Anthes.

Processing Information

Collection processing was completed in August 2025. Original file groupings were identified and kept intact, and original folder titles were retained. Publications were separated as a single series. Misfiled and loose items were returned to their logical place within the collection.

Duplicate records, travel vouchers, purchase orders, and receipts were weeded from the collection. Human resources records, student records, and other records containing personal data and sensitive information, such as social security numbers, were shredded.

The collection was rehoused in acid-free folders and boxes. Metal paperclips were replaced with plastic clips.
