Marshall Field Site, 1967-1986

 Sub-Series

Scope and Contents

This series contains documents regarding building a permanent site at Marshall, CO. Documents include Master Planning Report and planning documents for additions. The National Science Foundation purchased the Marshall Field Site, a 32-hectare mesa-top area southeast of the NCAR Laboratory and a mile east of the town of Marshall, CO. NSF leased the land since 1964 and managed by the NCAR Field Observing Facility for use as a maintenance, testing, and research site. The Marshall Site was used for fabrication, modification, and testing of radar systems, calibration of antennas, testing of laser equipment and various scientific instruments, and development and testing of balloon launch techniques during the 1970s and 1980s. Most of the NCAR staff relocated to the Foothills campus from Marshall in 1991. This site is used as a winter weather research site for the Research Applications Laboratory (RAL) where scientists focus on solid precipitation measurements (snow and icing events). The Marshall Field Site is not open to the public.
