Photographic materials, 1961-2000, undated
Scope and Contents
This sub-series consists of over 10,000 sets of photographic negatives, as well as slides, produced by the UCAR/NCAR Photographics staff from 1961 to 2000. The negatives and slides document scientific research conducted in laboratories and at field sites; depict research equipment, aircraft, computers, and weather phenomena; portray NCAR staff, visitors, meetings, lectures, and special events; and document administrative matters. The negatives include original images taken by staff photographers and copy negatives produced for NCAR/UCAR staff members. The copy negatives are usually identified as “copies” or “copy negatives” in this inventory. Please note that for the copy negatives, the date listed likely refers to the date the Photographics Laboratory created the copy. The date of the original image was usually not recorded. If an original date was recorded, it is included in the item description. The copy negatives include some images from as early as the 1940s, including images of Walter Orr Roberts at the Climax Observatory. Also included in this sub-series are collection inventory binders, card catalogs and contact sheet binders that aid in locating images in the collection, and subject binders containing contact sheets, slides, and related documentation.

Arrangement
The first sub-series of photographic negatives (1961-1987) in this finding aid was created directly from the Photographics Laboratory subject card catalog. Like the card catalog, this sub-series is arranged alphabetically by subject. However, each set of negatives is only listed once in the finding aid, even if it pertains to more than one subject. Searching by keyword is necessary to retrieve all relevant results. The second sub-series of photographic negatives and slides (1987-2000) was created from the negative and slide inventory binders. This sub-series is arranged numerically by negative or slide number. This numerical arrangement is roughly chronological.
Arrangement
The Photographics staff assigned each set of negatives or slides a number. Some of these numbers are followed by the letter codes B, C, BC or S. The letter code S indicates slides. Numbers with no letter code and numbers followed by B, C, and BC refer to negatives. The B and C letter codes indicate the filing location and whether the negatives are black-and-white or color. If the number is followed by B, the negatives are filed in the 4x5 run (mainly copy negatives). If the number is not followed by a B, the negatives are filed in the 2 ¼ inch / 35 mm run (mainly original images). If the negative number is followed by a C, the negatives are color negatives. If the negative number is not followed by a C, the negatives are black-and-white negatives. For example, 4901 indicates black-and-white negatives filed in the 2 ¼ inch / 35 mm run. 2643BC indicates color negatives filed in the 4x5 inch run.
