What Makes the Wind Blow? (Encyclopaedia Britannica Earth Science Series), 1965
Scope and Contents
Film Specifications - 16mm Kodak ; Description - From inside cannister lid; GRADE LEVELS: Upper Elementary Grades, High School. SUBJECT AREAS: Science, Geology. ; CONTENT: This film is the search for the cause of a typical onshore sea breeze at the beach. Conditions related to the breeze are observed, possible explanations proposed, experiments in laboratory models are made, and the results are checked in nature. In this way, pressure differences are found to be associated with the normal daytime air movement. But the security of these discoveries is shaken by the reversal of the wind direction during a wind storm that blows offshore. Principles are established earlier are used to find the cause for the storm, and to discover that the local beach conditions have been overwhelmed by larger and stronger air movements. There is a list of 15 vocabulary terms and a number of questions for additional study. Film depicts lab experiments, temperature experiments, beach experiments and ocean experiments examine air pressure, with simulations.
