Derecho ribbon cutting, 2023-08-18
Scope and Contents
NCAR’s new supercomputer was formally inaugurated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on August 18, 2023 at the NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center (NWSC). Among the dignitaries who participated in the ribbon cutting for Derecho were Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon; Wyoming Senator John Barrasso; Antonio Busalacchi, president of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR); Everette Joseph, director of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), and Ed Seidel, president of the University of Wyoming; and top officials with the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE). Joining these dignitaries was Wyoming high school student Cael Arbogast, who named the computer as part of a Wyoming-wide contest in 2021.
