The history of the NCAR Library began in 1959 with the publishing of‚ "Preliminary Plans for a National Institute for Atmospheric Research." In this document, the need for a Library Facility was overviewed, pp. 62-64, and fully described in Supplement II, Library Supplement by Ole V. Groos. The NCAR Library has evolved from the vision in this document to two locations to serve UCAR/NCAR/UCP scientists and staff in their research, education and scholarship needs.
The collection includes documents about the general history of the NCAR Library, annual reports, correspondence, memos, surveys, reports, space planning, administration, budget, computerized information system, publications,photographs and brochures.

Most of the materials in this collection are open for access. Some folders in the Administration Series covering confidential subjects are restricted until 2025.

Not all of the material in the collection is in the public domain. Researchers are responsible for addressing copyright issues.
Arrangement is by material type and then chronological order. The original folder titles have been maintained as much as possible. Some folder titles are derived from divider tab labels of materials previously housed in binders. Materials are arranged chronologically within folders and housed in 2 boxes.
Physical Access Requirements
The collection must be viewed in the Archives during normal business hours.
Source of Acquisition
The materials have been collected from NCAR Library staff files over the stated period of time.
Method of Acquisition
Preservation measures included removing some metal fasteners, rehousing photographs in appropriate enclosers and re-housing the collection in acid-free folders and boxes.
Accruals and Additions
Accrual of Library Board materials in December 2013 from Karon Kelly (accession #2013.025).
Processing Information
The NCAR Library Records were processed starting in January 2013 and completed in March 2013. During processing, folders were arranged by type and chronological order was established. All materials were placed into acid-free folders and boxes. Some vendor brochures and materials were discarded. Routine correspondence, purchase orders, duplicate publications, reprints, and vendor materials were weeded from the collection.
