  • Existence: 1924-

David Atlas enlisted in the Army Corps in late 1942. He studied meteorology at New York University (B.Sc., 1946). Following his 1944 commission as a weather officer, he studied at the Harvard-MIT Radar School. He received the D.Sc. (1955) in meteorology from MIT while working at the Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratory where he led the weather radar research program for 18 years. In 1959-1960 he was an NSF Senior Fellow at Imperial College in London. He also taught at the University of Chicago and subsequently headed both the Atmospheric Technology Division and National Hail Research Experiment at the National Center for Atmospheric Research. In 1977 he established and headed the Laboratory for Atmospheric Sciences at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center where he is currently a Distinguished Visiting Scientist. He was President of the American Meteorological Society in 1975. He received a number of awards from the AMS including the Rossby medal (1996). He also received the Robert M. Losey Award from the American Institute of Aeronautics (1966) and the Symonds Memorial medal from the Royal Meteorological Society (1989). He was elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering in 1986. Scope and Contents The David Atlas Papers collections contains correspondence, clippings, photographs, microfiche, handwritten notes, conference minutes, research bibliographies and articles that provide a glimpse into the work of Dr. Atlas at the Harvard-MIT Radar School, a record of the National Hail Research Experiment (NHRE) from 1974 to 1975 and an account of the evolution of the Atmosphere Technology Division (ATD) during Dr. Atlas's tenure from 1972-1975.
