Balloon Assembly, August 1972-August 1975
A preliminary drawing of the Mother GHOST (henceforth known as the Carrier Balloon) flight train layout is presented as well as administrative correspondence concerning balloon procurement. Also included is a memo from Passi and Lally on the calculation of balloon geopotential height based upon the number of sondes dropped during a day or nighttime environment.
HF Transmitter, 1974
Correspondence in this file sets forth the rationale for using a sun angle/magnetometer (SAM) technique to locate the position of Carrier Balloons as well as SAM card number assignments and test procedures.
Cutdown Device, 1973-1975
Correspondence with the U.S. Department of State confirming the addition of am HF command balloon cut-down system on all Carrier Balloon flights to destroy the balloon prior to crossing latitude 20 degrees North. Also included are copies of Department of State cable to the Paris embassy requesting French approval to launch balloons from Kourou, French Guiana.
Parachute, 1972, 1974
Design considerations and equations are presented for a Carrier Balloon dropsonde parachute.
Dispenser , 1974
An analysis of the heat loss and heat capacity of a Carrier Balloon dropsonde launched from a dispenser at a temperature of +20 degrees Celsius to +30 degrees Celsius in daytime and as low as -30 degrees Celsius near dawn is presented as well as the results of empirical tests to determine a thermal time constant.
Omegasonde, 1973
A memo, Wind Variability with Time and Space using sequential drops of Omegasondes, is described and simplified equations for time and spatial variability of the wind field up to 30 km are presented. Other correspondence covers an Omega Dropsonde Analysis and also a description of error in wind measurement using 3 and 4 Omega-station configurations.
Meteorological and Omega Data Digitizer (MODD), 1973-1975
Copies of engineering change orders covering the MODD design are included as well as a final report by Operations Research Inc. covering the "Analysis of the Measurement of Phase Using the Beuker MODD."
Ground Data Processor (GDP), 1974-1975
Several GDP test plans and procedures are found in this file.
Command Receiver, 1974-1975
Pre-flight test procedures for the Carrier Balloon electronics package and several photos of the electronics package.
Dual Mode Transmitter, 1974-1975
Copies of several engineering change orders as well as a transmitter tune-up procedure are in this file.
