MAP, 1979-1980
This files contains a request for NCAR support (superpressure balloons and telemetry) for a Middle Atmosphere Program (MAP) to study coupling of electrical phenomena in the middle atmosphere. A copy of NCAR's favorable review is included along with an estimate of costs. The name of this program was later changed to Electrical Properties of the Middle Atmosphere (EMA) and seven flights were made from Christchurch, New Zealand, in 1984.
LLAMA, 1978-1982
Early correspondence describing the LLAMA (Long-Lived Atmospheric Monitoring Airship) concept and the specialized balloon material.
LLAMB: Long-Lived Atmospheric Measurements Balloon, 1974-1981
This file contains the complete history of a superpressure flight using composite materials (aluminized tedlar, Mylar, aluminum foil, and Kevlar fabric) and associated electronics to monitor balloon performance during a multi-year flight.
RACOON: Radiation Controlled Balloon, 1980-1982
The RACOON concept permits the flight of large, low cost polyethylene balloons for several weeks at stratospheric altitudes without ballast. The balloon ascends each morning and descends at night. This movement of 15 to 20km in altitude provides an ideal platform for vertical soundings and sampling measurements in the stratosphere. The theory is described as well as the results of three globe-circling flights.
Federal Aviation Administration, 1967-1970
Ball Brothers, 1967
A report covering the "Proposed Thermal Design of an NCAR GHOST Balloon Package."
John M. Beukers Labs, Inc., 1968-1973
Correspondence and contract documents for the design and manufacture of an Omega tracking system for Carrier Balloon. A final report is included.
United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority, 1968-1972
Correspondence covering long duration, high altitude (100,000 feet) balloon flights from England to Canada. Included is a copy of the operations plan and a report discussing flight results.
GARP, 1966-1973
Planning documents and correspondence of the Joint Organizing Committee for the Global Atmospheric Research Program (GARP).
Buenos Aires, 1966-1977
Correspondence relating to the establishment of a GHOST balloon tracking station in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the transfer of necessary supplies and equipment, and correspondence between balloon tracking personnel an NCAR staff.
